And even if it was a pathfinding glitch, it went on a bit too much. But when you fight and kill an enemy at a few feet/metres from another one which never reacts, that experience was just game breaking. I wasn’t expecting the kind of AI you have in Alien Isolation, for example. For a game which revolves around avoiding threats rather than facing them head-on, Syndrome’s foes are near oblivious to sounds unless you are in close proximity and I found them to be blind as bats, when it comes to sneaking up in front of them and switching the flashlight on and off. The one big problem however, the elephant in the room if you wish, has to be the artificial intelligence. The enemies have enough variety and even the weaponry, on the later levels. Survival horror does not does not equate to being a helpless victim. You do have the option to fight back, which I really appreciated. Something to set it apart, at least in gameplay terms from the titles mentioned above. I know it’s rather hard to put a new spin on a tale that’s been copied dozens of times even in the film industry (Event Horizon, comes to mind) but I was expecting at least one original aspect within Syndrome. From Dead Space, Doom and all the way to Alien Isolation. You got game mechanics and tropes from almost every other space horror title that I can think of. Suffice to say, it’s wholesomely unoriginal. I never make a habit out of spoiling any details regarding the stories in the games I review and thus I shall not make an exception even in this case. But we shall focus on the gameplay for now. No one can deny that Syndorme doesn’t look the part and yet if you spend a few hours with it, the cracks do emerge along with several other minor issues. It’s becoming sort of a trend nowadays in video games, to focus a lot on style over substance. If you own Valve's Steam Deck, you can have fun testing out your brand new handheld gaming console with Aperture Desk Job. With this, the lack of keyboard and mouse controls is to be expected. Also, the game really was intended to be played and experienced on the Steam Deck. As such, a typical playthrough of it will be rather short compared with other games. Now, being a walking simulation of sorts, it does not have any semblance of story or narrative to it. Its sound effects and music also received the same level of detail and attention. It will let you explore a beautifully-crafted world filled with highly interactive elements by utilizing the handheld's various input and control methods. The result is a game that takes design cues from the Portal games' sci-fi look and aesthetic. It does so in a rather classy and sophisticated-like way, though.Īperture Desk Job is Valve's attempt at creating an immersive experience that's built around the Steam Deck. As a game that was intended to showcase the Steam Deck's hardware and features, that is exactly what it does-unapologetically flaunts Valve's spanking new handheld gaming console. It's described as a "walking simulator," but not in the way you might think. In Aperture Desk Job, you play as an entry-level desk worker on your first day on the job.
